Younger Magdaleno maintains focus while title shot looms for older brother

Less than a week from Saturday, Jessie Magdaleno will head on an expedition to Macau, where he hopes to witness his 130-pound older brother win his first major title. Junior lightweight contender Diego Magdaleno takes on WBO titleholder Roman Martinez in a fight that will be televised by HBO2 in the afternoon as part of a special “night” of boxing, and as usual with the Magdaleno brothers, Jessie will be along for the ride.

 But first things first, the younger, and according to many, the more talented Magdaleno brother has his own business to take care of. The 21-year old junior featherweight prospect fights journeyman Carlos Fulgencio on Saturday's Timothy Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov undercard where he is expected to get a quick and impressive victory.

Though the main event kind of went against the spirit of the ShoBox: The New Generation series, an entertaining battle unfolded between two 30-somethings looking to figure their place in the lightweight division.

Friday night at the Chumash Casino and Resort, Art Hovhannisyan (15-0-2, 8 KOs) had to work harder than he would have liked to eek out a 10 round split-decision win over former lightweight titlist Miguel Acosta (29-6-2, 23 KOs) after dropping him hard in the opening round.

On July 20, Gary Shaw Promotions will bring a doubleheader to the esteemed prospect series ShoBox: The New Generation from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. as confirmed by matchmaker John Beninati. The card was initially going to air three bouts but one bout fell out, as detailed below.

As has been previously reported, the card will be headlined by a 10-round lightweight bout between unbeaten Artyom Hovhannisyan of Glendale, Calif. by way of Armenia against former titleholder Miguel Acosta of Venezuela. The two televised undercard bouts have not been previously reported anywhere.

Joe Hanks, heavyweight, 28, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. [18-0, 12 KOs] 
Though not as well known as American heavyweights of the future Seth Mitchell and Deontay Wilder, Hanks has quietly put together a respectable career in four years as an American heavyweight hopeful. Hanks scored an improbable one-sided win over then-unbeaten Golden Boy prospect Ashanti Jordan a few years ago and has stayed the course, though not with much fanfare. Hanks has yet to fight on television despite being one of the better kept secrets in American heavyweight boxing. With Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing backing him, Hanks should at least be able to break the barrier and make it on television moving forward. Despite being from the East Coast, Hanks established himself in the banquet halls and small houses in Southern California, fighting twelve times in all there. At one point, this writer recalls then-manager Prentiss Byrd offering to pay for Hanks’ spot on cards, yet he still had problems finding him fights. At 6’4” Hanks has good size and has good power that he has learned to utilize better recently; he’s scored six stoppages in eight fights since the opening of 2010. In a particularly shallow time in U.S. heavyweight boxing, Hanks is near the top of the class.

The card, promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, will also feature exciting once-beaten bantamweight prospect Chris Avalos against unbeaten Jhonatan Romero in a ten round attraction opening up the televised portion of the broadcast.

In a shocking upset, Alejandro Perez [15-2-1, 10 KOs] scored an emphatic one round knockout of former contender Antonio Escalante [24-4, 15 KOs], whose career is now in doubt following the starching.

It's not so much the result that was shocking, but the way the fight finished. Most people that pegged Perez as a danger to Escalante figured he would box his way to a victory over Escalante. Instead, with less than thirty seconds in the first round, Perez stuck a jab in the stomach of Escalante and followed it up with a huge overhand right that crushed the favorite and bounced his head off the canvas.
