In the main event of Telefutura's Solo
Boxeo Friday night at Buffalo Bill's Casino in Primm, Nevada,
undefeated Jessie Vargas [15-0, 8 KOs] may have written the final
chapter of former WBA junior welterweight champion Vivian Harris's
once promising career, scoring a one-round stoppage when Harris
decided he could not come out for the second round after taking a
sustained beating over the full three minutes. Harris [29-6-1, 19
KOs], of Brooklyn, New York by way of Guyana, was buzzed more than a
handful of times and a knockdown could have been ruled against him at
the very end as his knee brushed the ground following a vicious
flurry on the ropes. Referee Joe Cortez called off the bout at 3:00
of round one and Vargas, born and raised in Las Vegas, earns the
biggest win of his young career.
Undefeated Golden Boy prospect Bastie
Samir [10-0-1, 10 KOs] of Las Vegas, Nevada was extended the distance
for the first time in his young career as San Diego, California's
Lester Gonzalez [11-4-1, 6 KOs] took him six rounds in a competitive
over-the-limit middleweight bout that ended in a split draw. Samir,
who is managed by Cameron Dunkin and trained by Kenny Adams, fought
with little respect for Gonzalez' power as he threw wildly leaving
himself open for counters when off balance. The third round saw a
wild exchange from both fighters in the corner where Gonzalez seemed
to land some hard shots which seemingly had no effect on that former
Ghanaian Olympian. Gonzalez turned in his best performance in a run
of fights against up and coming prospects as he opened up more than
he has been known to. The pace slowed after the action packed third
with each round being close. One judge each ruled it 58-56 in favor
of both Gonzalez and Samir. One judge found it 57-57.
The Bronx, New York's Eddie Gomez [4-0,
3 KOs] boxed smart en route to an easy decision victory over game but
outclassed Roberto Lopez [4-2-2, KO] over six onesided rounds in a
junior middleweight clash. Gomez was just superior in every way; he
fought aggressively over the first two rounds landing at will before
slowing the pace in the third and fourth rounds by dodging in and
out. Lopez came out with a purpose in the fifth round as he pressured
Gomez on the ropes before Gomez turned things back in his favor
mid-round. Gomez played it safe in the sixth and moved well enough to
stay out of harm's way. Official scores favored Gomez 60-53, 59-44,
and 59-55.
Former Miami Hurricane football player
Quadtrine Hill [4-2, KO] out of Hollywood, California was
unsuccessful in his attempt at handing Alexander Flores [4-0, 2 KOs]
his first blemish, losing a unanimous decision in a four-round
heavyweight scrap. Flores could not miss with the straight right, and
aside from a third round charge from Hill was the much busier and
aggressive fighter. Flores was breaking down Hill at the end of the
fourth round but ran out of time to try and earn any sort of finish,
instead winning 40-36 and 39-37 twice on the judges' scorecards.
In the card's opening bout, Paul Green
[2-1] of Compton, California earned a split decision victory over Kai
Zama [5-3, 3 KOs] of Costa Mesa, California in a four round
lightweight bout. Green hurt Zama at the ends of both the third and
fourth stanzas, which were otherwise close. Zama won 39-37 on one
scorecard which was overruled by the 39-37 scorecards rendered by two
judges.
In a more competitive than expected
four-round women's junior welterweight bout, Tatina Anderson [3-1-1,
3 KOs] of Las Vegas, Nevada had her hands full with Maywood,
California's Lissette Medel [2-1-1], as the two fought to a majority
draw. Medel was coming off of an unbelievable more than four year
layoff and kept with the pace that Anderson set early. Anderson
flashed her power in the opening round but Medel countered well in
the second. In the fourth round Medel did just enough to earn a draw.
The six bout card was presented by
Golden Boy Promotions in association with Roy Englebrecht Promotions
and was partially televised by Telefutura's Solo Boxeo.
