I've always wondered why boxing outlets never appoint a Rookie of the Year. To determine rookie status, a fighter must have turned professional in 2013. But, like in baseball, where if you didn't reach a certain amount of plate appearances, for this award you could qualify if you fought twice or less total in years previous.
With that in mind, I thought I would designate my own Rookie of the Year for 2013, adding a couple of honorable mentions.

Frampton out of Saturday fight with Briceno

Belfast junior featherweight contender Carl Frampton announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he will be unable to fight Everth Briceno this Saturday at London's Wembley Stadium as scheduled, due to an ear injury.
Frampton's tweets read:
"I'm upset to have to announce that I have been ruled out of my fight on Saturday by the BBBofC. An old injury mildly reoccurred in a spar. A specialist initially informed me I was fit to box. Today, the BBBofC ruled me out. I'm so, so sorry, especially to the people who were coming to support me. It has been an amazing camp and I'm gutted I won't be able to showcase my improvement in Wembley."
The bout was to take place on the monster Frank Warren card featuring Dereck Chisora against Malik Scott and Billy Joe Saunders against Gary O'Sullivan. Frampton was making his debut with Warren after jumping ship from Matchroom Sport following his win over Kiko Martinez in February.

Overseas promoters hope to fill Golden Boy void on HBO

Earlier this week, HBO announced that it would no longer be doing business with Golden Boy Promotions.
With that announcement came the opportunity for other promoters and fighters to slide into the televised dates that may have otherwise belonged to Golden Boy.
In the past, HBO has televised shows from Europe, often airing them in the U.S. in the afternoon with a replay later that night, sometimes coupled with a live American broadcast. Occasionally, as was the case with the Joe Calzaghe-Mikkel Kessler super middleweight unification in November 2007, bouts have been held well past midnight in Europe so they could be televised live in America.

When the news broke that Dmitry Pirog would be unable to fight Gennady Golovkin on an Aug. 25 edition of HBO's Boxing After Dark, hardcore boxing fans felt it was a devastating blow as that bout guaranteed action and intrigue.
Fans can hold out hope that Golovkin will indeed be facing a step-up in competition as Matchroom Sport's Eddie Hearn has informed TQBR that they are in discussions to make a fight between Golovkin and Grzegorz Proksa, whose promotional rights Matchroom owns. Proksa is coming off an 8th round technical knockout victory over Kerry Hope which took place just last weekend, avenging a questionable majority decision loss that took place in March, Proksa's only blemish so far in 29 professional contests.

As the dust settles on Andre Berto's
newly-claimed welterweight crown, Leave It In The Ring speaks to
promoters Lou DiBella and [Matchroom Sports’] Eddie Hearn—who
represent the latest IBF champion and undefeated Englishman Kell
Brook, respectively—on the possibility of a meeting between the two
welterweights.
“Well, we are fighting [Rafa]
Jackiewicz who has beaten Jan [Zaveck] and Jackiewicz is #5 in the
IBF, so when we beat him we will be right there for a shot at Berto,”
stated Hearn just days after the enthralling but brief bout between
the Haitian-born Berto and Jan Zaveck.

hiccups inevitable to this novel undertaking and also how the Super
Six has affected the career trajectories of the participating
fighters.
For Ken Hershman, or any diehard fight
fan, satisfaction is guaranteed. In addition to two alphabet
trinkets (and a big shiny trophy), tournament spoils include the
illustrious vacant Ring title plus much-deserved accolades. And had
the purpose of the Super Six not written itself, culminating with the
a meeting of the division’s true leaders, Showtime had covered
their bases by securing a lucrative multi-fight deal with Lucian
Bute. So fans of the Romanian kingpin and those dubious about the
legitimacy of Andre Ward and/or Carl Froch—poised to meet in

With the Super Six World Boxing
Classic headed down the final straightaway, Leave it in the Ring lead
writer Mark Ortega makes a comprehensive appraisal of the
groundbreaking tournament’s unfolding and considers what the future
holds following its culmination. Included are insightful takes

provenance of the Super Six and all the elements necessary for the
execution of such a historic event.
Just shy of two years ago, an
announcement was made that would rock the foundations of not only the
168-pound weight class, but of the boxing world. Showtime, the long
time runner-up in terms of premium televised boxing coverage in the
United States, had announced a six man, abbreviated round robin
tournament that would make great strides in determining a true
champion for a weight division that had been lacking in prestige.

When
24-year old Belfast super bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton
operates within a boxing ring, it is with a subtle confidence that is
unobjectionable considering the young fighter's smooth combination
punching and heavy right hand.
Against
Venezuelan Oscar Chacin, Frampton mixed his arsenal to the head and
body in a way that would make you believe he has more experience than
his 9-0 [6 KOs] record would indicate.
Fellow
Northern Ireland natives Brian Magee and Paul McCloskey both recently
made unsuccessful bids for world titles, but its no surprise that
Frampton already has many in the area already thinking he could be
the one to break the recent spell.

When the Super Six World Boxing Classic
was first conceived at Showtime, the idea behind it was to crown more
than just one star, and ultimately build the tournament champion into
a crossover star that the network could champion in the coming years.
With last Saturday's lopsided victory
over former middleweight kingpin Arthur Abraham in the books, and the
second portion of the tournament final on the verge of being
determined on June 4th between WBC champion Carl Froch and
2005 “Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year” Glen Johnson, its an
immaculate time to take a look at how things have progressed and
where it could lead.
