Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. earned a highly disputable 10-round unanimous decision over Bryan Vera on Saturday in Carson, Calif. The "victory" by scores of 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92 was seen on HBO in the U.S. and followed a circus in which Chavez Jr.’s side negotiated a new weight mid-fight week after showing up heavy.

Few were as close to the action on Saturday than HBO commentator Jim Lampley, who spoke with RingTV.com briefly about the result after the fight.

“I don't like to keep a score while calling a fight,” said Lampley shortly after wrapping up the broadcast.

“I thought (unofficial HBO judge) Steve Weisfeld's score of 96-94 was entirely justifiable. A draw wouldn't have surprised me. 98-92 is way off base. It just wasn't that kind of a fight; 97-93 doesn't seem right to me either.”

Over the course of its 15 year run, HBO's Boxing After Dark series has produced some of the sport's most exciting matchups. The series has televised cards from all over the world in eight different countries with more than 125 championship bouts being broadcast.

The inaugural broadcast on Feb. 3, 1996 featured a smashing 122-pound contest between rising Marco Antonio Barrera and a still quality Kennedy McKinney. It was a back-and-forth war with tons of bad blood. The program, which has focused on building stars for its World Championship Boxing brand, has hardly looked back since that first show.

On Saturday, a rematch of one of last year’s best fights tops an HBO B.A.D. telecast.Brandon Rios looks to duplicate his mid-rounds stoppage of Mike Alvarado at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The first fight, which took place last October in Carson, Calif., was a B.A.D. opener (for Nonito Donaire-Toshiaki Nishioka), while this fight will headline – to lots of fanfare.

After finishing up a 35-year run providing some of the most poignant words to some of HBO's greatest boxing moments, you had to know Hall of Fame broadcaster Larry Merchant wasn't going to rest on his laurels long. Since retiring in December, he played himself in a movie alongside longtime colleague Jim Lampley and got a call from Top Rank Promotions to help commentate on a historic boxing card that will take place in Macao next month alongside fellow all-time great broadcaster Tim Ryan as well as former colleague and legendary former heavyweight champion George Foreman.
