In the last decade, American heavyweight Tony Thompson had lost just twice, both in failed world title opportunities against Wladimir Klitschko.

Thompson, THE RING’s No. 9-rated heavyweight, was denied his chance to get a third try at Klitschko on Saturday night when he was soundly outpointed by unbeaten Bulgarian contender Kubrat Pulev in Germany in an IBF eliminator.

Fighting for the second time in less than 50 days, the 41-year-old Thompson got off to a great start, clearly winning the first two rounds while also likely winning the third, giving him an early cushion to work with. Thompson's right jab set him up for some solid left hands that had Pulev looking a little out of his depths.

Just less than three weeks ago, 41-year old Tony Thompson further added to his legitimacy as the best American heavyweight when, for the second time in five months, he stopped British prodigy David Price.

Thompson (38-3, 26 KOs) confirmed to RingTV.com on Thursday he will step in the ring again on Aug. 24, but not in any sort of tune-up. Pending IBF approval, his fight with unbeaten Sauerland Event heavyweight Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs) of Bulgaria will be the final eliminator for a shot at Wladimir Klitschko.

"I just found out today that it is for sure," Thompson told RingTV.com.

Friday night in Reno, Nevada, fighting just two weeks after stopping Nagy Aguilera in three rounds in Carson, California, Chris Arreola assumed a role with more spotlight as he stepped into the ESPN Friday Night Fights main event against Kendrick Releford that was vacated by an intriguing junior welterweight bout between Josesito Lopez and Steve Upsher when Lopez suffered an injury in training.

Arreola [32-2, 28 KOs], who fought off-television two Saturday's ago on fellow Goossen-Tutor stablemate Andre Ward's undercard, weighed in at a trim 236 pounds and worked hard to earn a seventh round stoppage against the durable journeyman Releford [22-15-2, 10 KOs], who had only previously been stopped twice in fourteen losses.

Arreola [31-2, 27 KOs] will be stepping in against journeyman Kendrick Releford just two weeks after scoring a third round stoppage of the game Nagy Aguilera in Carson, California away from the cameras in an off-television appearance.
