On Feb. 18, 1989, in a fight televised by CBS Sports, Puerto Rico's Jorge Maysonet fought the fight of his life as he went for his first world title.

Unfortunately for Maysonet, on that night, he ran into the buzzsaw that was Simon Brown when the welterweight was at the top of his powers. Maysonet was impressive (and fearless) as he bounced a number of power punches off Brown's dome without any reaction from the champion. This, despite Maysonet having scored 19 knockouts in 19 victories at the time.

Maysonet, like many other opponents, would eventually find Brown's power too much, as he was knocked out in three rounds. He would never get another opportunity to fight for a world title and retired five years later.

Though many memorable moments remain from last Saturday's shocking result at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, one of those moments that stuck with me late into the following week about Josesito Lopez was simply him making his ringwalk. Emblazoned on the right breast of his jacket was a large logo: Thompson Boxing.

Josesito Lopez was the first fighter Thompson Boxing signed to a contract in 2004. Though they cut the opening day ribbon on their company in 2000, Lopez was the first fighter to sign an exclusive deal to be promoted by the Orange County-based outfit.

Both promoter and fighter have ridden through their fair share of bumps in the road, but Lopez's upset win this past Saturday over Victor Ortiz was an unquestionable high point.

Friday night from the Chumash Resort & Casino, WBC #1 super middleweight Anthony Dirrell took one step closer to his aspirations of winning a world title, scoring a fourth round stoppage of #2 rated Renan St Juste of Canada in the twelve-round main event of a ShoBox: The New Generation televised card promoted by Gary Shaw Promotions.

Dirrell [24-0, 21 KOs] more or less controlled the action throughout despite a hesitancy to engage early on. Dirrell worked well in the opening round, landing a few nice combinations behind his jab.

On the eve of Chris Arreola against Tomasz Adamek, just a few blocks away at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, Mauricio Herrera [14-1, 7 KOs] of Riverside, California rebounded from his recent controversial defeat to Mike Anchondo by stopping Efren Hinojosa [30-8-1, 17 KOs] of Lakeside, California on a corner stoppage in the fifth round of a pretty close fight.

Herrera was hit far too often but he applied pressure for a majority of the bout and wore his opponent down. At the end of the fifth round, Hinojosa's corner called a halt to the bout. Herrera wasn't particularly impressive, but was the much more accurate fighter. Herrera languished against the ropes a bit too much and that could be trouble against a puncher at 140, which Hinojosa is not. Herrera is looking for a rematch with Anchondo later in the year.
