If there’s one thing I’m a bit iffy on with Red Bull Sound Select’s #30DaysInLA series, it’s the tendency for the headliners to not go on stage until really late at night.

I realize they are trying to get people in the doors to see the opening acts — as Red Bull put together this concert series for really cheap tickets in an effort to highlight artists they’re trying to “break” (hence the blue fluorescent BREAK MUSIC signs you’ll see at all of these events throughout November). But looking around the Fonda Theatre, you could see people were growing anxious as 11 pm approached and electro-folk darlings Sylvan Esso hadn’t taken the stage yet.

The first legitimate live performance of Red Bull’s much-anticipated second installment of #30DaysInLA – the series of events that take place across every day of November – saw producer/songwriter Grimes aka Claire Boucher turn up a blistering hot sold-out show at the Mayan Theater.

Walking out onto the stage at 10:15 PM with her signature multi-colored hairstyle, some butterfly wings and a skirt — as well as some backup dancing help, Grimes jumped right into new material with the track “Laughing Without Being Normal.” She dusted a lot of her new stuff off for the first time a few weeks prior at Beach Goth, but this felt a little more special in the magnificent confines of the Mayan, a true downtown LA treasure. Her new album Art Angels will drop Nov. 9, so this was quite the sneak peek.

Last year, Red Bull Sound Select did the unfathomable and put together a completely-booked November featuring big-name and rising artists playing in mostly small or peculiar venues, as well as some special events mixed in. What it meant was there was something awesome to do every day of the month, from seeing Run the Jewels tear up the Echoplex with Travis Barker to Bad Religion at the Mayan and too many things in between. They had raffles, put some talented artists they were pushing on the undercards, and even provided free parking if you showed up early.

After getting loads of Red Bull swag, munching on empanadas, and getting strung out on vodka Red Bulls (THERE WAS SO MUCH RED BULL) I bumped into fellow Grimy Goods contributor Mark Ortega. ZB: I only bumped into you a bit later in the night. How was it your first half? Did you get there in time to swag a screen-printed Courtney Barnett poster?

MO: No! I thought those were just for people that won them via the scratchers? I got one of the #30DaysInLA posters though — No. 2 in my collection.

I’ve been fortunate enough to hear The Preatures perform their new single “Somebody’s Talking” three times this year. The downside is that it’s made the anticipation of the single’s release nearly become the end of me.

Luckily, not only has the single officially dropped, but the Sydney, Australia rockers have also pushed out a video for the bangin’ jam out. Singer Isabella Manfredi is the second coming of Chrissie Hynde and this song and video only validates that opinion even more.

Ask any venue booker how difficult it is to set up one show and they’ll tell you it can be a huge pain in the ass. Extrapolate that over the course of 30 days in one city across multiple venues, and the task seems downright impossible.

Tuesday, Red Bull Sound Select announced that they’ve managed to do just that with their #30DaysInLA, a series of music-related events that will take place all across Los Angeles in November in mostly intimate venues with extremely affordable ticket prices featuring a number of more than solid acts involved.
