Friday night, Solo Boxeo makes a return
to Telefutura following a weekend off with a very competitive super
featherweight main event between fringe contenders Antonio Escalante
[24-3, 15 KOs] and Alejandro Perez [14-2-1, 9 KOs] in a ten round
attraction at the Fairfield Sports Center in Fairfield, California.
The fight may not look like much on
paper, but in comparison to the forgettable February the program had
that saw numerous mismatches headlining the Friday weekly cards, it
looks like a barnburner.
Escalante has proven he is not quite an
elite fighter though there is still time in his young career to
progress and pick up a trinket. Perez is on the verge of becoming an
opponent if he loses a second straight fight to a young promising
fighter as his last loss came against super bantamweight contender
Rico Ramos. Perez lost a wide decision to the young fighter who may
be on the verge of securing a world title fight against Tokyo's
Akifumi Shimoda who owns the WBA belt.
If Escalante were to come away with the
win, he could find himself in another big opportunity as he failed in
his last try against Daniel Ponce de Leon, getting knocked cold in
the third round last September.
When the two stepped on the scales
Thursday, Escalante was two pounds over the 130-pound weight limit.
On his second attempt later on, Escalante made the limit after Perez
and his team made the decision that Antonio had to make the weight or
they wouldn't take the fight no matter how much money they were
offered. Good for the fans in Fairfield that Escalante was able to do
it, otherwise there was a risk of the card being cancelled if it lost
its ten round main event. Perez weighed in at 130 on the nose.
Other weigh-in results:
Manuel “Tino” Avila [2-0, KO] 121
vs. Frank Gutierrez [2-8-2, KO] 120

overweight. Robb will get 10% of the purse while 10% will go to the
commission.
